#706: Love Shouldn't Hurt: Recognizing Dating Violence
Dating violence, emotional and/or physical, is a serious problem affecting 1 in 5 girls plus boys, who rarely report it. This program features a yearly county wide symposium that raises awareness and educates both sexes about the signs of dating violence. Attended by nearly 300 diverse teens, the highlight is a group of peer educators who perform vignettes and then answer in character to questions raised by audience members. They stress the role of bystanders and friends in helping victims. STAR, another peer education group, shows how teens can work in schools to prevent dating violence. This program opens discussion among boys and girls on this critical issue.
