Across the United States, graduation rates in most urban districts still remain between 50 and 60 percent. A Community Concern is a documentary about people who refuse to accept the system’s failures, and are working for change. Their spirit, passion and commitment shows that when organizers, parents, youth and educators work together, they are successful. It brings together stories of people facing different challenges, but share similar goals. Our prime audiences are educators, youth, organizers, parents and community members concerned with the state of education.
“Your work is possibly the most important part of the current debate because it drives home the issue of systemic failure from local and community standpoint, but also opens the door to hope for change.” – Steve Ausburg, Director, Brooklyn College Community Partnership

A Cricket In The Court Of AkbarDVD, 2008, 1 hour 22 minutesIn the winter of 2003, my guru, sitar maestro Pandit Krishna Mohan Bhatt, invited me to travel with him to Jaipur, India to study North Indian classical music. While I was there I learned of a music competition, and Krishna Ji's family encouraged me to sign up. Much to my amazement, I ended up winning the competition. What's more, this competition was the largest of it's kind in the state of Rajasthan, and I was the first American ever to participate. A Cricket in the Court of Akbar documents my return to India to compete again at the Sri Mahendra Bhatt Music Competition, this time in the Tournament of Champions. I soon discover that my western identity is at odds with the Indian musical community, and that to truly pursue this art form I must understand and embrace the Guru Shishia Parampara—the important relationship between the Guru and the disciple. Sitar in hand, I attempt to navigate the ancient tenets of Hindustani music before the final face-off against India's newest generation of classical musicians. Throughout the film, a variety of experts from India and the United States offer insight into the timely issue of global cultural exchange and the timeless appeal of North Indian classical music.

A Trip to the Country2008, 75 min.A voyage in search of the illusion of modernity, which haunts Cameroonian society. A Trip to the Country questions, sometimes ironically, the notion of development associated in Africa with a tropical modernity which can be summarized as follows: Everything from Europe is modern, while all things local are archaic and must be discarded. After the ravages of slavery and colonialism, the African continent now faces another threat: educational systems, which perpetuate inferiority complexes and dependence vis-à-vis the West. This self-destructive mentality also establishes a social hierarchy placing modern city dwellers above backward rural people. A Trip to the Country is a personal reflection on our obsession with modernity, our desire to conform to a certain model of development, which ironically turns our backs on the possibility of real progress, and perpetuates our dependency to Humanitarian so-called aid.

Afghanistan UnveiledAfghanistan, 2003, 52 minutes, Color, VHS/DVD, SubtitledFilmed by the first ever team of women video journalists trained in Afghanistan, this rare and uncompromising film explores the effects of the Talibans repressive rule and recent U.S.-sponsored bombing campaign on Afghani women. None of the fourteen journalist trainees had ever traveled outside Kabul. Except for one, none had been able to study or pursue careers while the Taliban controlled their country. Leaving Kabul behind for the more rural regions of the country, the filmmakers present heartbreaking footage of Hazara women whose lives have been decimated by recent events. With little food and no water or electricity, these women have been left to live in caves and fend for themselves, abandoned in the wake of the U.S. invasion. While committed to revealing such tragedies to the world, the filmmakers also manage to find moving examples of hope for the future. A poetic journey of self-discovery, Afghanistan Unveiled is a revelatory and profound reminder of the independent medias power to bear witness and reveal truth.

Maleknasrs survey is thoughtful and diverse, ranging from rural families who dream of steady employment and peace, to proud female medical students who aspire to serve their country. Extraordinary interviews include a frank discussion about Taliban repression with one of the countrys only women judges, and an emotional conversation with filmmaker Siddiq Barmak, director of the Afghani feature Osama, describing the regimes senseless destruction of countless films and works of art. Exquisite camerawork throughout captures subtle facial expressions, architectural grandeur and a landscape of disarming beauty, painting a vivid portrait of both the Afghani people and their country. Al'leessi...An African ActressNiger, 2004, 69 minutes, Color, VHS/DVD, SubtitledZalika Souley is in her fifties. She lives with four children in a two-bedroom apartment with neither electricity nor water in Niamey, the capital of Niger. But thirty years ago, she was a movie star and Africa's first professional female actress, working with such celebrated directors as Niger's Oumarou Ganda and Moustapha Alassane. Souley was once the legendary bad girl of African cinema defying directors with her compelling improvisations. Yet, despite her fame, her life was beset by difficulty. In moving and often heart-breaking interviews, Souley speaks wistfully about how audiences confused her with the women she portrayed - vamps, adulteresses, prostitutes - and how, as her stardom rose abroad, she became a pariah in her own country. More than a simple chronicle of Souley's extraordinary career, the film is a moving homage to the heyday of Nigerien cinema in the 1960s when a cottage industry of Westerns, detective films and thrillers delighted audiences. African actors donned cowboy hats and channeled their heroes - Steve McQueen, Jimmy Stewart and Ronald Reagan. AL'LEESSI (meaning "a destiny" in Songhoy) encapsulates the condition of women in modern African society and the history of cinema in Niger which has all but dissolved in recent years. Equally essential for women's studies, cinema studies, African and post-colonial studies, AL'LEESSI is a love letter to this pioneer of Nigerien cinema and a poignant meditation on the current state of the African film industry.

All in this TeaDVD, 2007All In This Tea (2007) is an appropriately rich and complex brew that will prove fascinating not just to connoisseurs but also to viewers interested in the spiritual, historical, scientific, political, and religious aspects of this age-old pick-me-up. As a young man, David Hoffman took what became a permanent break from college, becoming a self-described "vagabond" in China because it had the best tea on earth, spending time with monks and sipping with the Dalai Lama. Many years later, we follow Hoffman's long odyssey to bring artesian teas grown and cultivated by traditional means into America - watching as an idealistic businessman turns from rapture over the tea to frustration with language barriers and corporations that won't allow him to do business with the farmers. All In This Tea is an arty and entertaining documentary that features additional comments from scholars, enthusiasts, and authors (as well as a rather baffling cameo by director Werner Herzog). All In This Tea is both captivating and eye-opening, and many will be surprised to learn that crafting tea is as intensively artistic as making wine (in the Oolong competition alone, for example, the top winning tea is sold for $20,000 a pound).

Sigal, hiding her true sexual identity from her family, needs to distance herself to be able to have a more complete life with her partner. Together they travel through Greece in search of a new home. The couple tape each other throughout their travels, producing a video diary, each expressing her feelings as she observes the other. Their unfurling journey pushes them to question the very heart of their search; essential dilemmas such as: "Where do I belong?" "What is home?" and "How can we be part of our families when we are different from them?" Almost There presents a couple that dares: dares to change their life, dares to deal with personal fears, dares to search for happiness...and most of all, dares to make a documentary which carefully explores the beauty and difficulties of intimacy, sexual identity, and the complexity of family relationships--all difficult to examine, unless we turn the camera upon ourselves.

Amazon SistersEngland, 1992, 60 minutes, Color, VHS, SubtitledAMAZON SISTERS portrays the vision and strength of women surviving in the hotly contested Amazon rainforests. While international attention has focused on saving the rainforests, considerably less attention has been paid to the plight of the human inhabitants of Amazonia. Women are at the frontline of the struggle to save their environment and to rebuild a region suffer-ing the effects of inappropriate development. A film which beautifully expresses the strength, humor and ability of the women of the Amazon Region. It sharply reminds us, however, that simply feeling romantic about rainforests isnt enough. The need for serious support for both the environment and the health and safety of the people there is made abundantly clear. Margaret Prosser, National Womens Secretary Transport and General Workers Union.
AmazoniaUS, 2001, 8 minutes, Color/BW, VHSIn this highly personal and visually evocative testimonial, critically acclaimed South Asian filmmaker Nandini Sikand poignantly presents her sisters triumphal recovery from the emotional and physical scars of breast cancer. Lyrically incorporating poetry, experimental video and Super-8 montage, this moving piece looks at the myth of Amazonian women warriors who were said to have cut off their right breast to become better archers and compares their legendary battles to the war being waged against breast cancer. As Sikands sister reads passages describing her fight with the disease, the geography of her body is explored and compared to the scared landscape of the urban environment. Traversing the pulsating and dizzying streets, the city and body become one to highlight womens lives as triumphant urban warriors. Moving and inspiring, this short experimental video is a tribute to all women who have struggled with breast cancer.

America's Victoria1995, 56 minutes, Color/BW, VHSIn 1872 Victoria Woodhull became the first woman to campaign for US President. AMERICA'S VICTORIA is a wonderful chronicle of the life of one of the most important and unrecognized women in US history. Although she was a radical suffragist, she refused to restrict her Presidential campaign to the issue of women's suffrage. Instead, she advocated a single sexual standard for men and women, legalization of prostitution and reform of marriage. AMERICA'S VICTORIA combines rare archival images, Woodhull's own words (read by Kate Capshaw), and illuminating interviews with contemporary feminists such as Gloria Steinem to present a fascinating portrait of this remarkably brave woman.

The American Egyptvhs, 57 min., 2001"The American Egypt" revisits the first socialist government of the Americas, the Mexican Revolution on the Yucatan peninsula, 1915-24. Within the study of Mexico's past, the Yucatan merits consideration as a thing apart. Attempts to secede in the 19th Century suggest Yucatan was, like Texas and California, only imperfectly attached to the Estados Unidos Mexicanos. Until the middle of the 20th Century, neither highway nor railroad joined the peninsula to the rest of the nation, and ties were closer with the United States and the Caribbean. Totalitarian rule and the monocrop agriculture turned Mexico's poorest backward into its richest.
An American Family RevisitedAmerican Family Revisited is a ten-year update on the Loud family and their reflections on becoming the first reality TV stars. Filmmakers Alan and Susan Raymond, who filmed the original 12-hour cinema vérité series An American Family and spent seven months recording over 300 hours of film, revisited the Loud family a decade later for a new family profile. The Raymonds had continued their friendship with the family members over these past ten years and knew that their unique experience of becoming media celebrities, coupled with the effects of a family's divorce, had changed them in many ways. The filmmakers wanted to explore a first-hand report from each family member on how they were affected by these two dramatic life experiences.

Program 3 starts with a revealing look at the Chinese role and sacrifices in building the western half of the monumental Transcontinental Railroad. Their actual experience is a part of our history which is not commonly known today. Here, the Chinese were 80 - 90% of the workforce and built one of the most difficult parts of the railroad, over the Sierra Nevada mountain range. They were forced to work from sun up to sun down, labor in very dangerous conditions, and sleep in tents in the middle of winter, without any protection against the cold or avalanches which swept whole camps down mountainsides.
And Still I RiseEngland, 1993, 30 minutes, Color, VHS/16mmInspired by a poem by Maya Angelou, this powerful film explores images of Black women in the media, focusing on the myths surrounding Black women's sexuality. Like COLOR ADJUSTMENT, in which Marlon Riggs looked at images of Black people on television, AND STILL I RISE uses images from popular culture to reveal the way the media misrepresents Black women's sexuality. A combination of fear and fascination produces a stereotypical representation which in turn impacts on the real lives of Black women. AND STILL i RISE intercuts historical and media images with hard-hitting contemporary views of women of African heritage as they struggle to create a new and empowered perspective. Both a celebration and a critique, AND STILL I RISE is essential viewing for those interested in African American studies, women's studies, media studies and popular culture. ArtistUS, 1999, 10 minutes, Color, VHSInternationally acclaimed photographer and filmmaker Tracey Moffatt takes the viewer on a fast-paced journey through Hollywood's depiction of the artist. Using a wealth of clips from classic cinema bio pics and popular television sitcoms, the video voyage spans centuries of art and art-making to reveal how five decades of mainstream media have perceived the creative process and creators themselves. A lively music track underscores the fervor and passion we have come to associate with artists and their typical one-dimensional representations on the large and small screen. Punctuated by recurrent gestures--the confident whisk of the paint brush, the futile laugh of frustration, and the violent destruction of one's own work--this amusing, thought-provoking array of well-known images paints an incisive portrait of the artist as a total Hollywood fabrication.
