#445: 9-11: Looking Back...Moving Forward

Since September 11, 2001, Americans have heard conflicting messages: the world is forever changed, but we must return to our normal routines and activities. Through the eyes of high school teens near Ground Zero and others living outside New York, this program explores how the tragedy and ongoing events have impacted the way todays teens view the world and their future. We see who and what has helped them (school, parents, friends), and what they are doing to help each other. A school counselor stresses the importance of expressing their feelings. They also discuss issues such as stereotyping, cultural understanding, the media, and civil liberties. We meet a Muslim girl who copes with the emotional impact of prejudice and misunderstanding through writing. The teens also relate the positive changes such as feeling closer to family and friends; gaining more perspective on whats important in life; realizing the need for tolerance; and having a new interest in world affairs. As one teen explains: in the past they had sympathy for teens in other countries who live with the daily threat of violence; now, they have empathy. Combining vibrant cinema-verite footage, emotional in-depth interviews, still photographs and archival footage, the film examines the relationships the volunteers formed among themselves and with the rescue and recovery workers they cared for. As the characters moving, sad, funny, colorful stories unfold, the film reveals a diverse community of people transcending politics and culture as they come together in an effort to heal their city and themselves.
