I Forgot, I don't Remember
1998, 75 min.
Made by the son of famed Mexican writer, Juan Rulfo, purports to be the sons
search for his father among the people who knew him. But as their memory betrays
them, the film becomes a brooding reverie on love, memory, death, and old age. Despite the universality of its themes, the film is unequivocably based in Mexico its people and its land and it puts forward a model of a particularly Latin American avant-garde influenced by local tradition. The film moves from the harsh and
vertiginous beauty of the Mexican desert to the craggy faces of its elderly protagonists. Their meditations on life, love and death, their lovelorn old songs, dirty jokes and pronouncements on the madness of todays youth and the power of the Virgin of Guadalupe, their half-forgotten memories of run-ins with the Devil, flying saucers and even Juan Rulfo provide the films thematic and philosophical center of gravity. But Rulfo does not merely recount or represent the memory loss of old age, his film recreates and in a certain way induces it in the viewer as narrative logic gives way to a more impressionistic flow of images and stories that blur past and present, country and city, natural and artificial, youth and age, reworking our consciousness of time and providing an unsettling yet tender look at the nature of consciousness at the twilight of life.

Ice People
A once-in-a-lifetime journey with Antarctica's 21st century explorers
By Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Anne Aghion
Unique in the genre of exploration and adventure films, ICE PEOPLE takes you on one of the earths most seductive journeysAntarctica. Emmy-winning documentary filmmaker Anne Aghion spent four months on the ice with modern-day polar explorers, to find out what drives dedicated researchers to leave the world behind in pursuit of science, and to capture the true experience of living and working in this extreme environment. And, as it turns out, the film also witnesses one of the most significant discoveries about climate change in recent Antarctic science.
Intense public focus on climate change has turned the shores of Antarctica into a new tourist mecca, making the earths coldest continent the hot place to be. But, inland from the penguins and ice floes is a magical Antarctica of volcanoes, boulder-strewn valleys and ominous glaciers. Only a small number of scientific research teams get there, braving severe conditions to learn about our planets history, and make predictions about our future.
ICE PEOPLE heads out into the deep field with noted geologists Allan Ashworth and Adam Lewis, and two undergrad scientists-in-the-making, where they scour across hundreds of miles to find tiny, critical signs of ancient life. Their findings would give the first evidence of a green Antarctica over 14 million years ago, that disappeared with a sudden shift in the temperature of the continent.
The most authentic film about life on the ice since the trailblazing expeditions to Antarctica chronicled nearly a century ago, ICE PEOPLE conveys the vast beauty, the claustrophobia, the excitement and the stillness of an experience set to natures rhythm.
ICE PEOPLE is directed by Anne Aghion. Produced by Anne Aghion and Benoît Gryspeerdt. Edited by Nadia Ben Rachid. A co-production of Dry Valleys Productions, ARTE France, and ITVS International, in association with Sundance Channel.

If You Love This Planet
This powerful documentary records a lecture given to American students in 1981 by Dr. Helen Caldicott, founding president of Physicians for Social Responsibility. In the film, Dr. Caldicott outlines the effects of detonating a single twenty-megaton bomb, and traces the development of atomic weapons from the devastating bombs of the 1940s to the even more dangerous, apocalyptic weapons of today. If You Love This Planet provides an urgent warning that time is running out - that unless we shake off our indifference and work to prevent nuclear war, we stand a slim chance of surviving. With current nuclear weapons proliferation among Third World nations and potential terrorist groups, Dr. Caldicott's following words have added poignancy: You're going to have to change the priorities of your life if you love this planet.

Ileksen
In this companion piece to Yumi Yet,the villagers of Papua New Guinea recreate the British electoral system with their first independent election (ileksen is Melanesian Pidgin for election). The dominant impression is one of chaos: a land with rich cultural traditions and very specific economic and political problems striving to fit itself into an imported form of democracy.Without media experts to package their campaigns, Papua New Guinea's politicians employ a wide variety of techniques to secure votes: megaphones, rock bands, tea with the headmistress of a British school. Western-style campaigning may seem out of place, but the people in the film appear to understand it quite well. In the end, the significance of the community's struggle lies less in the outcome than in the process. In Her Own Time: The Final Fieldwork of Barbara Myerhoff
In 1981, Professor Barbara Myerhoff began an anthropological study of the Fairfax district in Los Angeles. Fascinated by the influence of Orthodox Judaism in creating a community, she decided to make a film about this village in the heart of Los Angeles. In June of 1983, Dr. Myerhoff learned that she had cancer. She asked director Lynne Littman, with whom she had collaborated on the Academy Award-winning Number Our Days, to join the project, which she realized would probably be her last work. It is an essential film for the couples and their families and friends faced with the problems of integrating two religious beliefs into one marriage. #601: Iraq Unplugged
This program covers a second videoconference exchange between a group of Iraqi teens from Baghdad and their peers from a Connecticut school just weeks after the Bush administration declared an end to major combat in Iraq. Iraq Unplugged offers viewers a unique insight on post-Saddam Iraq through the eyes of the teens who lived through the war. From the bullet holes in Rubas living room curtains, to Omars lively stories about befriending U.S. troops and becoming their translator, they talk openly about their experiences, their attitudes about the U.S. role and their hopes for the future.
No political sides are taken in the program, which presents the Iraqi teens without pity or melodrama-just as normal kids with hopes and dreams very similar to those of American youth The open emotion and raw honesty of these young people make this video utterly compelling, and a surefire discussion started. Highly Recommended. Video Librarian

Is Freedom Dangerous?
This instructive and entertaining film provides a realistic introduction to the workings of the judicial branch of the U.S. Government. A young reporter narrates her newspaper's journey to the Supreme Court in appeal of the government's injunction against a controversial article. When the newspaper initially loses in a lower court, the case is brought before the U.S. Court of Appeals and then a petition is filed for a hearing before the highest court in the land. In addition to demonstrating the workings of the courts, the film also allows students to consider complex questions surrounding the First Amendment guarantee of free speech.

Is It Really So Strange?
As the foppish, sexually ambiguous, brilliant singer/songwriter of the 80s music legend The Smiths, Morrissey brought intelligence, wit and mystery to pop tunes still unmatched in their ability to make grown men cry. In this intimate documentary, filmmaker William E. Jones interviews a new, but equally fanatical, fan base of The Smiths and Morrissey: Latino youths in East Los Angeles. Making the connection between The Smiths' working-class, Manchester-raised, ethnic Irish experience and that of the sons and daughters of Mexican immigrants in Los Angeles, Is It Really So Strange? is the first documentary that allows the fans themselves to speak at length about their lives, their loves and their brief encounters with their idol. Interviews with members of tribute band The Sweet and Tender Hooligans reveal even more about Morrissey?s enduring appeal among the pompadoured denizens of the Inland Empire who, as one fan puts it, relate to Morrissey because "he always sounds sad and depressed and lonely - all the good stuff."
