Narrow Gauge Logging Railroads of El Dorado County

47 minutes • VHS Only • Order #19-EDL Mostly Color with narration and sound effects.
In the first half of the twentieth century, it was railroads -- using geared steam locomotives -- that facilitated logging California's enormous stands of virgin timber. They conquered the rugged terrain with steep grades, switchbacks and inclines, and proved to be a practical means of transporting logs to the mills. Many of these diminutive carriers were narrow gauge, and two of the most fabled, but least documented, were the Diamond & Caldor and Michigan-California, with its sensational 1200 foot high, 1/2 mile cableway spanning the American River gorge in remote El Dorado County.

Natives

vhs, 25 min., 1991
The U.S.-Mexican Border is the site of a disturbing increase in violence and racial intolerance. Along the border there are now a number of nativist groups that have organized with the stated purpose of ending undocumented immigration. Natives follows the individuals involved in San Diego's anti-immigration movement. Relying principally on a direct cinema style and eye for the absurd, the film critiques the nativist position by contrasting their professed love of country with their racist and anti-democratic attitudes.

New York Underground

By the late 1800's, New York City's healthy supply of immigrants was creating a major overcrowding problem. The congested transportation system were a source of constant complaint. A ferocious 1988 blizzard ground the city to a halt, leaving no doubt that New York needed an underground rail system. A plan was put into effect, and construction began in 1900.

At least 7,700 men were used to build the ambitious twenty-one-mile route with its four tracks. To construct a level track, the workers had to tunnel through mountains of earth, underground streams, areas of quicksand, and around building foundations. Thousands were injured and at least forty-four people lost their lives.

Finally, on October 27, 1904 the Interborough Rapid Transit--IRT--opened to the public. The subway was so successful in reducing street-level traffic and redistributing the population that just three years later plans to expand it were begun. Construction continued at full pace, and has never completely stopped.
Examines the history of New York's subway system -- its creators and its long and dangerous construction schedule.

No Applause, Just Throw Money

Irving Berlin once did it. So did George Burns. Eubie Blake. Jackson Browne. Steet performing is an old-fashioned kind of theater in vogue again. On any day, in any weather, the streets of New York are transformed into stages as dancers, singers, comics, musicians, magicians and mimes perform for passers-by. The challenge is to make the city stop. And sometimes, it does -- if the entertainment is good and the moment just right.

This enchanting documentary spotlights 101 determined performers embodying the energy and creativity that fuel the Big Apple. Featured players woo the city on the sidewalks, in the subway, and even on the Staten Island Ferry, as they ambitiously carry on the tradition of passing the hat. It's show business with no budget, no theatre and no reviews. From poets to puppeteers, ventriloquists to impressionists, this kaleidoscopic film captures and celebrates the magic that transforms pavement into proscenium, conjuring a vibrant and uplifting portrait with universal appeal.

A student at UCLA remarked after a screening, ?_?How did you happen to film all of those movie stars after they got a ticket??__ After making ...no lies, a serious work, Block wanted to do something with some comedy that would also continue to explore reality and fiction in a film that would mix actors and real people. no lies

The power of ??1/2no lies in communicating the feelings of a rape victim has had proven results. The film unfolds as a conversation between a male interviewer and a young woman who has recently been assaulted. The interviewer's probing questions strip away the woman's defenses, offereing the audience an intimate view of the trauma sufferend by rape victims. No film to date has been able to match the emotional force generated by no lies.

For professional programs (such as nursing, medicine, psychology, and law enforcement), no lies provokes pointed discussion of the types of attitude a rape victim encounters when she seeks professional help. By identifying the victim's point of view, the film helps professionals be more understanding. For groups concerned with rape, no lies provides an invaluable means of comparing one woman's problems to those of others. Society's attitude toward rape is also examined and called into question.
