Rails to the Redwood Empire

104 minutes • DVD Only • Order #20-RE Mostly Color with narration and full sound track.
Rails to the Redwood Empire, originally released in 1991, is a pictorial history of the steam era on the Northwestern Pacific Railroad, which featured four distinct modes of transportation. The early, pre-1900 period was mostly narrow gauge, depicted in archival “then and now” photos. Marin County’s aquatic separation from San Francisco spawned an efficient paddle-wheel ferry service, dating back to 1868; and its development Southern Pacificas a bedroom community and resort area fostered an electrified third rail commuter service in 1902. These operations are shown in separate sections. Commencing with the 1914 gold spike ceremonies, the main line from Marin to Eureka and major branches are covered in detail. The complexity of this relatively small railroad, which has intrigued generations of fans, is well-captured in these vintage films.

Raleigh D'Adamo's Washington Streetcar Films

2¾ hours of material, all color
Raleigh D'Adamo's Washington Streetcar Films is not a history (that will be the job of another installment of TGM's Capital Series), but rather a snapshot of the system in its final years. Every line was photographed from end to end. All lines are shown from trackside; the long stretches of rural private right-of-way on the 20 and 82 lines were also covered with rock-steady out-the-front shots. Raleigh shot like a pro - with a light meter for spot-on exposures, and using a tripod for every scene. Altogether, the collection includes over 11 hours of 8mm Kodachrome II film.

Red Grooms: Sunflower in a Hothouse

A colorful look at the life and work of an innovative artist, Red Grooms. Grooms is both subject and host as he sketches people in the streets of New York, traces his aesthetic development to his home in Nashville, and conducts a tour through the two-and three-dimensional walk-in works he calls picto-sculptoramas. A blend of painting and sculpture, high art and popular culture, Groom's environments capture the people and places of New York, rendering them in vivid caricature. By juxtaposing actual street scenes with Grom's satirical interpretations of them, the film provides a playful and often surprising perspective on the artist and inspirational sources, brilliantly refleting the humor and humanism prevalent in his work.

Travelling with the artist to his home town of Nashville, Tennessee for a retrospective of his work, the film reveals Grooms's early influences, while commentary from Barbara Haskell, curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art, offers insight into Grooms's pieces and their place within twentieth century art. Sharing the enrgy and effervescence of Grooms's unique creations, Red Grooms Sunflower in a Hothouse is an illuminating film portrait of the artist.

    Return Trips

The story of the Jewish people in America has been a complex saga of assimilation and anti-Semitism, religious observance and secularism. The Jews' extended love affair with the land of opportunity led to a better life and exceptional contribution to American society, but at the expense, some would say, of the the spiritual faith and values that have sustained the Jews over the milennia. Combining a lavishly detailed assemblage of archival materials with contemporary interviews and recent footage of Jewish ritual and practice, Return Trips presents a fascinating look at the history of Jews in the U.S. and traces the religious revival among American Jews that began in the late 1960's and continues today.

From the shtetls (villages) of Russia, where the Jews were subject to frequent violent persecution, to the slums on New York's Lower East Side and the assimilated milieu of Hollywood, to the optimistic, consumer-oriented suburbs of the 1950's, Return Trips describes the variegated and changing roles played by American Jews in the first half of the twentieth century. While many Jews continued to maintain a Jewish identity, Yiddish culture and socialist politics gradually supplanted dietary laws and synagogue attendance. The rise of Nazism and the horrors of the Holocaust served to remind American Jews of their tenuous place in the world, but assimilation into the mainstream continued, with little spiritual practice beyond the obligatory bar mitzvah and twice-yearly visits to temple.

Then, in 1967, the Six-Day War in the Middle East awakened a new generation of American Jews -- many of whom had been active in the civil rights and anti-war movement -- to the Israeli cause and to their Jewish identity. In the aftermath of that stunning threat to Jewish survival and Israel's subsequent triumph, American Judaism began to flower anew. Return Trips celebrates this renaissance of Jewish faith and culture in its multiplicity of forms, from the experiemental and creative responses of the Jewish Renewal Movement, to the piquant observations of newly observant stand-up comedian Marc Weiner, to the personal experiences of the filmmakers in bringing trditional Jewish practices in to their family life. Interviews with Rabbi Shlomo Friefeld, and early and important figure in the Orthodox return movement, and with the founders of the havura movement, whose members meet outside of the traditional synagogue structure, eloquently illustrate the phhilosphy underlying the new vitality.

Shot in New York, Washington, Philadelphia, Michigan, and Chicago, Return Trips is an informative and colorful journey into the American Jewish experience - a joyful, sometimes poignant exploration of the evolution of a people. At once specific and universal, it provides a case study of the encounter between tradition and modernity that is common to all religions, and offers an inspiring portrait of one group's rediscovery of a rich and ancient heritage.

    RSVP

RSVP is a lyrical piece which explores the emotions felt by a group of people when a man they all know dies. The story is woven together not with dialogue, but rather with the song ?La Spectre de la Rose? (from Berlioz? Les Nuits d?Ete, performed by Jessye Norman) which Andrew (the deceased) had requested several weeks prior to his funeral from a local radio station. His lover, Sid, returns home from Andrew's funeral, turns on the radio and, ironically, the d.j. announces Andrew's request and plays this hauntingly beautiful aria. The music forms a link between various family members and friends listening to it; through their images, reactions and memories we learn about Andrew's life and that he has died of AIDS. Sid (and the viewer) takes a small step forward in the grieving process. RSVP is an almost wordless tour-de-force about the impact of one man's death on those who loved him.

    Ruins

    vhs, 78 min., 1999
Counterfeiting is a practice with broad and devious implications, from the merest of fake objects to entire histories shaped as facsimile. The prologue to this wizardly jumble of newsreel snippets, travelogia, and stagy rants collates early colonial misconceptions of Mexico's populace, a stewpot of ethnographic and political distortions. From there, Lerner charts the rarefaction of this process that recontextualizes archeological objects as art. In this cultural valuation, Maya and Aztec objects are severed from their origins and further rarified within the confines of museums,. At the center of Ruins is Brigido Lara, a master forger whose pre-Columbian objects have been exhibited in major (and unwitting) museums throughout the U.S. and Europe. Is this the final subterfuge of the colonial projects--the real and the fake indistinguishable?

Running: The Campaign for City Council

The 2001 campaigns for the NY City Council were the most significant local races in decades for two reasons: term limits law deemed 36 Council incumbents ineligible for reelection, and reform of the city's campaign finance laws increased public funds available to candidates. This combination of factors made it possible for many candidates with local grassroots support to make a credible run for office for the first time. Running: The Campaign for City Council, is a one-hour program that tracks the progress of candidates in three diverse New York city districts as they vie for Council seats. The 2001 election cycle produced the greatest turnover in the Council's history. And the 2001 campaign season was the most exciting in decades - a rip-roaring, cacophonous display of democracy at the local level.

Rustbelt Phoenix: Saving the American Steel Industry

    http://s13130.gridserver.com/admin/index.php/films/add
R ustbelt Phoenix: Saving the American Steel Industry tells the dramatic story of how the United Steelworkers, faced with the bankruptcy of two of its largest employers, LTV and Bethlehem, found someone to buy the companies to save jobs and keep the industry from moving abroad. That new owner turned out to be Wilbur Ross, a major private equity investor. The Steelworkers and the new company Ross formed, the International Steel Group (ISG), agreed that the old companies were mismanaged and had far too many middle managers. The union agreed to more layoffs, but layoffs of managers as well as workers, and to major changes in work rules. In return, ISG maintained wages, provided benefits to retirees, and gave the union a major role in decisions from the shop floor to top management. The success of the partnership attracted a new buyer just two years later. Now the former LTV, Bethlehem, and several other American steel companies are part of Mittal Steel, the world’s largest steel company. In return for improvements in its contract, the union agreed to the sale. The story of saving a large part of the American steel industry is told through interviews with the major participants on the management and labor side. In addition, Rustbelt Phoenix includes an area committee meeting at Mittal’s giant steel plant at Sparrows Point, Maryland, as did in our previous video, Partners: Bethlehem Steel and the United Steelworkers. The changes in 10 years are startling. A decade ago, management listened to labor complaints; now the workers run the meeting and initiate cost savings and quality improvements.
