Sacrifce: Child Prostitutes from Burma

Each year thousands of young girls are recruited from rural Burmese villages to work in the sex industry in neighboring Thailand. Held for years in debt bondage in illegal Thai brothels, they suffer extreme abuse by pimps, clients, and the police. The trafficking of Burmese girls has soared in recent years as a direct result of political repression in Burma. Human rights abuses, war and ethnic discrimination has displaced hundreds of thousands of families, leaving families with no means of livelihood. An offer of employment in Thailand is a rare chance for many families to escape extreme poverty. Sacrifice examines the social, cultural, and economic forces at work in the trafficking of Burmese girls into prostitution in Thailand. It is the story of the valuation and sale of human beings, and the efforts of teenage girls to survive a personal crisis born of economic and political repression.

Safe Place, A

Gutman's first short film explores a high school boy's struggle with his emerging gay identity. Danny fakes a stomach ache so that he can avoid playing football and go to the cinema. His perspective is that of a young man on the verge of discovering his sexuality; the world is filled with straight couples and the longing stares of gay men.   In a dream sequence reminiscent of Sleeping Beauty, his tentative touch wakes a naked man and signifies his own awakening. After avoiding a gay sexual encounter in the cinema, he returns there to find whatever the promise of the dark theatre holds. This short is a wonderful story of sexuality, individuality and adulthood.

SAMSARA: (Sanskrit) Perpetual repetition of birth and death from the past through the present to the future, through six illusory realms: Hell, Hungry Spirits, Animals, Fighting Spirits, Man and Heaven. Samsara documents the struggle of the Cambodian people to rebuild a shattered society in a climate of war and with limited resources. Ancient prophecy Buddhist teachings, and folklore provide a context for understanding the Cambodian tragedy, bringing a humanistic perspective to a country in deep political turmoil. Satya: A Prayer for the Enemy

Since the Chinese occupation of Tibet, more than one million Tibetans have been tortured, executed or starved to death for their role in demonstrations against the Chinese occupation. Tibetan nuns have fearlessly staged demonstrations for independence. Countless nuns have been imprisoned and tortured for shouting slogans, criticizing the Chinese state in conversations with foreigners, possessing posters which call for Tibetan independence, or hoisting the Tibetan flag. The treatment they receive as political prisoners is brutal. In a deeply personal and lyrical style, Satya: A Prayer for the Enemy focuses on the testimonies of these nuns, revealing continued religious oppression and human rights abuses in occupied Tibet. For over forty years the Tibetans have adhered to the principles of nonviolent social change. Satya seeks to understand the basis and inspiration for this choice of nonviolence, and the spiritual principles that influence their understanding of the enemy.

Sentimental Women Need Not Apply: A History of the American Nurse

This documentary about America's largest group of professional women is a comprehensive and compelling exploration of the sometimes fanciful mythology and often hard realities which have characterized the field of nursing since its inception in the mid-19th century. Utilizing contemporary interviews, dramatic readings, film clips, and a wealth of vivid arhival drawings and still photographs, Sentimental Women traces the history of nursing from its military beginnings to the present, when modern technology threatens to displace the compassion that has always been at the heart of the profession. The film examines the exploitative elements -- the racial and sexual discrimination -- with which nursing has had to contend. It also documents the part played by student nurses in cleaning up early American hospitals, nursing's great contribution to public health, and the continuing difficult and essential role of nurses in the military. Alternately impressionistic and analytical, humorous and poignant, Sentimental Women presents a rich, multi-layered portrait of a vocation as exceptional as it is common.

Sex: Female

In Sex: female, five dozen American women representing a rich variety of ages, ethnic groups, and economic backgrounds go public with some of their innermost secrets. A 76 year old grandmother talks about how she manages sex with her 77 year old boyfriend three times a week, no Viagra needed. A sexy single mother says “when I do need sex, I get the man out of the drawer. He’s not going to complain, he’s not going to give me any trouble. He’s just going to do his job, wash off, and then get back in the drawer.” A long-married couple compare notes on why sex has completely vanished from their lives, despite their efforts to spice it up with such things as edible panties. Hugely entertaining but also poignant and thought-provoking, Sex: female is a sensitive look at a topic that rarely gets treated intelligently on television. The film is neither prurient nor euphemistic – instead, it’s a frank and open discussion about a topic that’s on everyone’s mind. None of the interview subjects had been interviewed before, and none are “professionals” of any sort – no therapists, writers, or sex workers. They’re just honest and compelling.

    Shark Callers of Kontu, The

For centuries, the villagers of Kontu, in Papua New Guinea, have gone to sea in frail outrigger canoes to call, trap, and kill sharks by hand. Now, after a hundred years of colonization and missionary activity, only a few men still understand the magic rituals of shark calling. The Shark Callers of Kontu illustrates the effects of cultural contact on the shark calling traditions.

The people of Kontu associate the sharks with spiritual forces and believe men can control these spiritual forces to their own advantage, or, through correct ritual, protect themselves from harm if they come in contact with the sharks. Now the base of their culture has shifted. The influence of Western culture and Christian beliefs has brought many changes to the islands. Some of the more complex rituals associated with shark calling have been lost over the years. When the men who now practice shark calling die, this unique and dangerous practice will probably die with them.

Silent Feminists, The: America's First Women Directors

Contrary to popular belief, women have been directing feature films since the silent era of the American film industry. Such directors as Lois Weber, Frances Marion, Dorothy Arzner and Alice Guy Blache were a significant presence in the early years of Hollywood, before the entrenchment of the studio systems temporarily put and end to women's participation.

Utilizing film clips, rare photos and interviews with survivors of the era, The Silent Feminists rediscovers the work of America's pioneering women directors, whose achievements are often overlooked in favor of that of their male counterparts. Co-directed by Anthony Slide, whom Lillian Gish called our preeminent historian of silent film, this groundbreaking work pays fond tribute to the more than thirty women directors who contributed much to the art and craft of movie-making.

Sing Faster: The Stagehands' Ring Cycle

With its four operas, seventeen-hour running time and months of rehearsal, staging Wagner's Ring Cycle is a daunting undertaking for any opera company. Jon Else goes backstage to show this rare event entirely from the point of view of union stagehands at the San Francisco Opera.

As these working men and women go about their astonishing feats of stagecraft, they give their own interpretation of the Ring Cycle's fantastic stories. During scene changes the stage carpenters may have as many as seven 1000-pound set pieces moving at once in fog, smoke, and in near-total darkness, working with precision choreography that certainly matches the opera itself.

While the gods are out onstage singing about the great problems in the world, we are doing all the hard stuff, says stagehand Spike Kirkland in the middle of his eighty-five-hour work week during dress rehearsals. During the ongoing backstage poker game, Kirkland and his cronies explain the four stupefyingly long dramas in lurid detail -- the fall of a decadent order of gods, compromised by their own greed and vanity, the sexy Rhinemaidens, the loud...really loud, Valkyries, and the giant clanking hydraulic dragon. Every night the stage crew creates a majestic fairytale/soap opera universe of trolls, giants, lightning, dragon's blood and magic mountains, in which the singers spin a dark tale of heroes who betray their own moral codes.

Jon Else is a master documentarian who employes remarkable camera work to tell a story. With stunning imagery and sharp editing he captures the shifting realities on-stage and off.

As Valhalla sinks down into fiery oblivion, a new audience stampedes into the theatre for a new performance. Finally, the entire 17-hour Ring Cycle unfolds before our eyes in a sixty second blizzard of time-lapse.

Wagner's 17-hour, 4 opera Ring cycle demands incredibly precise choreography not only for the performers, but for the theater's stagehands. This film shows an intimate look at the backstage work and dramas.

The Sixth Section is a groundbreaking documentary that follows the transnational organizing of a community of Mexican immigrants who live and work in upstate New York. The men profiled in the film form an organization called Grupo Unión, which is devoted to raising money in the United States to rebuild the Mexican town that theyve left behind. Grupo Unión is one of at least a thousand hometown associations formed by immigrants in the United States. The Sixth Section is the first documentary to capture this dynamic form of cross-border organizing, and in doing so, it shatters many of the preconceptions around immigrants. The film shows how immigrants are responding to the pressures of economic globalization, how small groups of people can make big change, and how immigrant communities are building transnational communities, even in these times of increasingly militarized borders.

      Sky Burial: Tibetan Burial Ritual

Sky Burial follows the ritual of "jha-tor", the giving of alms to birds in a northern Tibetan monastery - where the bodies of the dead are offered to the vultures as a final act of kindness to living beings. At the Drigung Monastery lamas chant to call the consciousness from the body. Juniper incense is burned to summon the vultures. Special body breakers, or "rogyapas", unwrap the bodies and cut away the flesh. The bones are crushed and mixed with tsampa, roasted barley flour. The entire body is consumed by the birds, assuring the ascent of the soul. The sky, or the universe, is where the sacred world lies. To merge with the sky after death is a holy event, one that replaces the sufferings of this world with peace.

With 6400 Little League teams in the U.S.all vying to be one of eight that get to play in the Little League World Series every summer, the chances of finding a team that would go all the way would seem to be slim to none. But filmmakers Louis Alvarez and Andrew Kolker were lucky: the twelve kids from Aptos, California who they started filming in May 2002 turned out to be amazing players who survived four grueling tournaments and found themselves at the Nirvana of youth sports, Williamsport, Pennsylvania, home of the World Series. The story of their journey is the subject of Kolker and Alvarez’ new feature documentary for public television, Small Ball: A Little League Story. Small Ball is a clear-eyed, unsentimental, and revealing behind-the-scenes look at one aspect of the youth sports phenomenon. Resilient kids, involved parents, and strong-willed coaches all play their roles against a backdrop of game-time emotions and superb athleticism.

      Soldiers Speak Out

Soldiers Speak Out is a powerful, first-hand testament to the reality of the military experience told entirely in the words of American veterans who have been to war and are now opposing it. We hear how they came to join the military, about their experiences in training and in war, and what led to the turning point when they decided they could no longer, in good conscience, participate in the war or keep silent. This half-hour documentary sheds light on the growing and courageous anti-war and anti-occupation movement within the military and their families, and serves as a counter-recruitment and organizing tool for activists, schools and organizations. It provides a sober view of the war in Iraq and an important counterpoint to the 'stay-the-course' rhetoric of the Bush administration.

In just over five minutes of beautifully drawn animation, A Special Letter tells a true story of love between a mother and daughter, recalling the difficulties of Europe during World War II from the perspective of one little girl who survived to begin a new life in America. Sparse narration is coupled with subtly shifting sepia pencil images and a haunting score for violin and flute. The film shows how the gift of life can be spiritual as well as physical. It touches upon the reversal of roles as an aging parent becomes like the dependent child. A Special Letter is an excellent tool for generating discussions of religious and moral content, the historical effect of the Holocaust, and the role of the aging parent in the family. The film provides a different approach to World War II concentration camps as seen through the eyes of a Christian child. Using both subtlety and simplicity, this is a truly special film.

In another segment of the film, she recalls a youthful commitment to her black heritage and explains the importance of family in her own development and as an institution in the black community. Through her poems she becomes a spokesperson on social injustices, sexual politics and popular culture. As she surveys the world around her, no subject is protected from her critical and mischievous poetic eye. Her criticism can be humorous, gentle or angry as she demands that her world become a better place. In a poem from the 1960s which reflects on the bitterness of the era, Poem for Black Boys, her tone chastises black youth: play back to Black...grow a natural and practice vandalism. But often, the film portrays her clever optimism, as in Ego Tripping when she writes: I am so hip even my errors are correct. Skillfully weaving performance footage with evocative photo-montage, archival footage and colorful animation, the film is a journey re-creating the history of the poet and the country.

Spirit to Spirit offers a compelling interpretation of serious concerns ranging from racism to romance. A charismatic, complex and talented artist, Giovanni shines as she reads her work. The film moves at a lively pace as her words are complemented by colorful imagery and a rhythmic musical score. Spirit to Sprit is a wonderful discovery for those unfamiliar with Giovanni`s work and a meaningful beginning for everyone who has said, I don`t understand poetry. It is an important addition to all public library collections and is of particular interest for courses in poetry, Black literature, American social history, cultural history and women's studies.

Confronted with such a strange wonderland, devoid of women, Green is compelled to reinterpret baseball's symbolism-its womb-like landscape, cycles, and rituals-to construct an iconography that pays homage to the female. With humor and irony, Green creates a tape that is both a personal revelation and a heretical portrait of America's national past-time.

Organized by United For Peace and Justice this event was part of a worldwide effort, as tens of millions of people on every continent stood together to say no to war. Produced by The Empowerment Project this video is a video record of the stage speakers and performers, including notables Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Harry Belafonte, Susan Sarandon, Angela Davis, Holly Near, Pete Seeger, and Richie Havens. Also featured are spokespersons Leslie Cagan, Julian Bond, Medea Benjamin, Reverend Graylan Hagler, and Miles Solay. Now you can see the entire program from that historic day and retain it as an archive. State of Fear: The Truth About Terrorism

      94 minutes • DVD-R
How can an open society balance demands for security with democracy? Based on the findings of the Peruvian Truth and Reconciliation Commission, State of Fear follows events in Peru, yet serves as a cautionary tale for a nation like the United States. Filmmakers Pamela Yates, Peter Kinoy, and Paco de Onis masterfully blend personal testimony, history and archival footage to tell the story of escalating violence in the Andean nation and how the fear of terror undermined their democracy, making Peru a virtual dictatorship where official corruption replaced the rule of law. Terrorist attacks by Shining Path insurgents provoked a military occupation of the countryside. Military justice replaced civil authority, widespread abuses by the Peruvian Army went unpunished, and the terrorism continued to spread. Nearly 70,000 civilians eventually died at the hands of Shining Path and the Peruvian military.

      Stealing America: Vote by Vote

Please contact us for discounts on multiple-unit purchases.

STEALING AMERICA: Vote by Vote documents significant irregularities in the Presidential election of 2004. While raising crucial questions, interviewees underscore the fact that election fraud and election reform are not partisan issues. We follow the stories of people who face a spectrum of challenges: from grassroots organizing to groundbreaking legislation. The overriding question that the film presents is: How can we create an election system in which voters have confidence, and in which they trust that their votes will be counted fairly?

The film weaves together dramatic behind-the-scenes experiences of poll workers, computer security experts, journalists, politicians, activists and voters of all ages. We hear from those who feel their communities were targeted for intimidation during the election, side by side with descriptions of irregular machine tallies, in which the number of votes tallied don't equal the number of votes cast.

Questions the film raises include: what caused statistically significant discrepancies between exit polls and final official vote tallies? Why was the mainstream media virtually silent about a spectrum of anomalies? What caused technical glitches such as votes switching from one candidate to another on touch screen voting machines in at least thirteen states? We hear from students who waited more than 12 hours to vote in OHIO, as well as Native American and Hispanic voters in New Mexico who registered to vote for the first time, only to learn that their votes were not counted.

The Presidential election of 2004 ignited both personal, as well as political passions for millions of people. For many, their involvement did not end when the election was over.

For Pollock, the term action painting best described his most controversial work, produced, produced by dripping paint from cans or pouring and hurling paint onto canvases.

      David Smith

He began is artistic career as a painter by turned increasingly to sculpture, influenced by the 1930s work of Picasso and Gonzalez; by 1935 he was working exclusively in welded steel.

      Struggling Unions

Labor unions played major roles in the history and politics of the 20th Century. They were a part of the New Deal-Fair Deal coalition that enacted Social Security and the G.I. bill in the US, and they played a similar role in Canada and overseas. Once, unionized workers were paid substantially more in wages and benefits than non-union workers; but now the margin is smaller. Are unions now an endangered social institution? Or can unions revive? Struggling Unions, Merrimack's newest video, examines this question by reporting on a new generation of leaders struggling to reform and revitalize their unions. This 35-minute video has case studies of three unions undergoing dramatic change: the Carpenters union, the Teamsters, and District 37 of AFSCME, the large New York City municipal union. Interviews with union leaders, union reformers, and labor experts tie the struggles in these three unions to the broader effort to reverse the long-term decline in union membership.
