A Tajik Woman

1994, 20 min., Color
A picture of an unknown Tajik woman found in a Russian book on Tajikistan encourages videomaker Mehrnaz Saeed-Vafa to reflect on issues of exile and cultural conflict for Muslim women from Afghanistan and Iran living in the United States. Moving interviews with four women (including the director’s mother) are interwoven with personal observations, images of the Tajik woman and fascinating footage of Iran and Muslim culture in the US. A TAJIK WOMAN touches on many issues familiar to Muslim immigrants: war and revolution, loss of homeland and conflict with fundamentalist Islamic values. Sharing these stories begins a much-needed dialogue for Muslim women; it also provides a better understanding of Muslim women who now live in the US.

Take a Ride on the North Shore Line

main program 90 minutes, approx. 30 min. extras, mostly color
Interurban Legends From the hustle of Chicago's Loop, along the shores of Lake Michigan to the streets of Milwaukee, The North Shore Line was a legend - for many, the very definition of the interurban railroad in America. Widely acclaimed as America's 'best known' interurban, the Chicago North Shore and Milwaukee was the perennial recipient of well earned speed and safety awards. For over sixty years, until its premature demise in 1963, the line served both commuters and through passengers, as well as carrying a significant amount of freight. The crown jewel of Samuel Insull's electric railway empire, the North Shore legend is secure in the annals of interurban lore. This cinematographic history of the line's last 25 years thoroughly covers the physical plant and equipment, with many exciting shots which dramatically illustrate the speed and precision of its operation. Truly everything you remember or want to know about the era of the "World's Fastest Interurban" can be found in this superlative film. This new edition of Don Olsen's classic tribute to The North Shore Line features a digitally remastered sound track.

Take it from Me

TAKE IT FROM ME is the story of four women struggling against great odds to raise themselves and their families out of poverty in New York City. It is also an in-depth look at the human impact of the 1996 Personal Responsibility Act and its five-year limit on public assistance. Has welfare reform been successful? Are former public assistance recipients better off once they leave welfare? Shot over a two year period, TAKE IT FROM ME lets these women speak for themselves. Iyoka and her husband Louie applied for welfare after a fire rendered them homeless. Less than a year later, they are cut off from the benefits that had been helping Iyoka pursue an education. Twenty-year-old Abby, a single mother of two, is in despair over her inability to afford decent housing or obtain public assistance. Unable to pay for an apartment, she loses her children to foster care. Middle-aged Teresa contends with mental illness while struggling to negotiate the job world. As welfare time limits loom and steady work continues to elude her, Teresa's sense of panic grows. Valentina is a tough, reflective survivor of drug addiction and welfare dependency. A self-described "welfare reform success story," she nonetheless strains to support herself and her three children on a cafeteria worker's wage. For all the determination Iyoka, Abby, Teresa and Valentina show, they have certain long odds against them. Since the passage of welfare reform laws, the number of Americans who receive public assistance has plunged from 12.2 million in 1996 to 5 million in September 2004, a decline of 59 percent. Yet while the Bush Administration regards welfare reform as an overwhelming success, poverty and unemployment rates in the US are at a 20 year high. As tax cuts for the wealthy remain in tact, 41 million Americans live without healthcare and homelessness is on the rise. A recent study by the Brookings Institute on Public Policy found that while the national welfare caseload has decreased dramatically, many cities are still struggling to help welfare recipients move into and stay in the workforce. Minimum wage work pays below the poverty line and an ex-welfare recipient's median income of $12,324 a year is hardly likely to allow her to climb out of poverty. Childcare grows more, not less, expensive. With welfare reform reflecting a hardening of political and social attitudes toward the poor, the system is less and less responsive to individual needs and circumstances - and more and more capricious in its exclusions. Directed by a former caseworker, TAKE IT FROM ME eschews easy answers and asks disturbing questions about the human impact of America's current welfare policies.

A Tale of Love

A film by Trinh T. Minh-ha , 1995, 108 min., Color
Portraying the Vietnamese immigrant experience through Kieu, A TALE OF LOVE follows the quest of a woman in love with ‘Love’. The film is loosely inspired by THE TALE OF KIEU, the Vietnamese national poem of love which Vietnamese people see as a mythical biography of their ‘motherland,’ marked by internal turbulence and foreign domination. A free-lance writer, Kieu also works as a model for a photographer who idealizes the headless female body and who captures Kieu sheathed by transparent veils. Voyeurism runs through the history of love narratives and voyeurism is here one of the threads that structures the ‘narrative’ of the film. Exposing the fiction of love in love stories and the process of consumption, A TALE OF LOVE marginalizes traditional narrative conventions and opens up a denaturalized space of acting where performed reality, memory and dream constantly pass into one another. Sublimely beautiful to watch, A TALE OF LOVE eloquently evokes an understanding of the allusive and powerful connections between love, sensuality, voyeurism and identity.

Thoth

The story of Thoth, a colorful street performer who recites original music inspired by his mythical world he calls the Festad. Born into a musical family, Thoth was stirred in a dream to take up playing the violin, and perform (or prayform, as he puts it) for the world. Garbed in a gold loincloth, chains and ornate headdress, Thoth hopes to initiate a healing process for humanity through his prayformances. The language of his songs and music is also from the mythical land of the Festad. With a performer's intense passion and energy, Thoth combines singing and dancing which draws from musical roots as diverse as Mozart and Jimi Hendrix.

Thoth began his musical career at an early age, learning how to play the piano. He shied away from practice sessions because the piano was in his home's basement, and the thought of descending into the basement filled him with terror. Instead, he learned to play the violin. By his own account, Thoth was a shy child, and uncomfortable with a mixed racial heritage of West Indian ancestry on his mother's side and Russian Jewish on his father's. Feelings of social rejection for his biracial parentage fueled his sense of isolation, and Thoth turned inwards for solace and inspiration. He ultimately learned to accept the duality of his ethnicity, and this fueled his musical creativity. Thoth eventually developed his prayformance routine, incorporating dance and operatic storytelling into his style of presentation.

Thoth currently still performs at his usual venues, his favorite being the Angel Tunnel in Central Park. But, as he points out, his other passionate interests include writing, cooking, dancing and the compilation of an encyclopedia about his world of the Festad.

"Thousand Pieces of Gold" is the story of a young Chinese woman brought to America as a slave during the late Gold Rush. Auctioned in San Francisco and transported to Idaho, she becomes involved with three men: a Chinese saloon keeper who owns her (Michael Paul Chan); a Chinese mule skinner who wants to marry her (Dennis Dun); and an American who wins her from her owner in a poker game (Chris Cooper). Lalu's tale begins in drought-stricken China where her father sells her. She is taken to San Francisco's Chinatown, where she is auctioned to a Chinese mule skinner, who is acting as agent for a powerful saloonkeeper in the heart of the northern Rocky Mountains. During the trek through the wilderness, Lalu falls in love with her captor, and he with her. But, true to his word, he delivers her to his master, a soulless Chinese entrepreneur intent on using her as a prostitute. Lalu enters into a deadly war of wills with this man and wins! only to learn she has been lost in a poker game to another man, an American. To her surprise, the American sets her free at a time when the Chinese are being prosecuted by local miners. Now attached by choice not force to this man, Lalu must decide whether to stay or to go. Time for Justice, A

A Time for Justice is the story of the American civil rights movement as told by those who fought the battle for the right to vote during the 1950's and 1960's. It depicts the struggle through the experiences of its foot soldiers: the men and women who rode where they weren't supposed to ride; walked where they weren't supposed to walk; sat where they weren't supposed to sit; and who stood their ground until they won their freedom.

Produced by four-time Academy Award winner Charles Guggenheim, A Time for Justice recalls the crises in Montgomery, Little Rock, Birmingham and Selma. But more importantly, it reveals the heroism of individuals who risked their lives for the cause of freedom and equality.

Jimmie Lee Jackson was killed by state troopers during a voting rights demonstration in Marion, Alabama. Opening at the cemetery where Jackson is buried, A Time for Justice used the first-hand testimony of participants and stunning archival footage to present a concise and compelling look at the grass-roots movement that sought to extend the fruits of democracy and return basic human dignity to all of the nation's people.

Titanic in a Tub: The Golden Age of Toy Boats

Academy Award-winner Rex Harrison narrates this delightful film about a time when the world was fascinated with the great oceanliners and naval vessels of the 19th and 20th centuries. Titanic in a Tub uses the famous Forbes Magazine collection of over 300 rare toy boats to explore the history of both full-size sailing vessels and their miniature counterparts.

The film juxtaposes recreated scenes of boys and their toy boats with an extensive compilation of archival film and vintage photographs of famous ocean liners, naval vessels and great maritime battles. This creative combination gives the viewer the sense of genuine sea adventure on board the ships as well as the child-like excitement elicited by the fantasy of toy boats.
A charming chronological account of the rapid development of maritime technology from the 1890's to the 1930's make Titanic in a Tub a fascinating history lesson. The technological advances which caused ocean liners to double in size and speed during this period sparked and arms race of the sea. National pride demanded that a nation's naval fleet possess the fastest and most luxurious ships afloat. The advent of submarines and evolution of battleships into giant dreadnought ships furthered this potentialy explosive competition for global preeminence. Public fascination with ocean travel and naval warfare encouraged toy makers in Europe and America to build toy boats of every size and description. Thousands of children played with thousands of different kinds of toy boats. Unfortunately, as with the vessels they emulated, there are few toy boats from that era left today.

Titanic in a Tub is narrated with great affection by Academy Award winning actor Rex Harrison. The film captures the romanticism of a world intrigued by the oceans while also providing an historically accurate account of the development of maritime technology in the early 1900s. It is a delightful film for all ages from intermediate through adult and is particularly useful in History Science, Social Studies, Geography and Crafts classes as well as for general interest audiences.
Explores the history of both full-size sailing vessels and their miniature counterparts.

Capturing footage that shatters any stereotypes of delicate, submissive Asian women, Price discovers that women in many parts of Asia have been doing construction labor for centuries. But conversations with these women show that development and the resulting mechanization are pushing them out of the industry. Their stories disturb the notion of “progress” that many people hold and show how globalization, modernization, education and technology don’t always result in gender equality and the alleviation of poverty.

Trials of Alger Hiss, The

THIS TITLE IS TEMPORARILY UNAVAILABLE.

In November of 1996, Alger Hiss died. For almost half a century, he had worked to clear his name, once as synonymous with Cold War conspiracy as was the Rosenbergs. Russian officials announced in 1992 that not a single document had been located that implicated Hiss as a Soviet spy. With today's CIA scandals involving Aldrich Ames and Harold Nicholson, the case of Alger Hiss remains an object of controversy.

Through contemporaneous newsreels and present day interviews with surviving participants, the film re-examines the case in historical contxt -- the Great Depression, Roosevelt's New Deal, the Spanish Civil War, the Yalta Conference, Truman's Loyalty Program, and the Cold War. The focus then is shifted to the case itself: The hearings before the House Un-American Activities Committee, the dramatic testimony of Whittaker Chambers alleging Hiss's spy activities, the trials and the conviction, and the appeal. Evidence obtained under the Freedom of Information Act is presented to jurors who voted to convict Hiss, with startling conclusions. And then the film ends, with the McCarthy era and Hiss's latest move to set aside his conviction.

Also included is an interview taped on October 15, 1992 with Colonel-General Dimitri Antonovich Volkogonov, Counselor of the President of Russia and the Chief of the Intelligence Archives of the former Soviet Union.
Account of the Cold War/espionage/perjury that catapulted Rep. Richard M. Nixon into national prominence, imprisoned a former State Department officer, and aroused intense political passions.

Troubled Partnerships

Running Time: 34:30 Minutes
Labor-management partnerships have been compared to marriages. It takes hard work to make them succeed. Even good partnerships struggle through hard times. If future partnerships are to succeed, it is important to learn from those that have run into trouble. Troubled Partnerships is about crises and failures in labor-management partnerships. It includes case studies of two companies, Bridgestone and Polaroid, one unionized, the other not. Bridgestone had a good working relationship with the United Rubber Workers that collapsed after tough financial times and a change in management. Polaroid developed an Employees' Committee that operated for 40 years as an illegal company union but was so popular that no one wanted to shut it down. However, the committee did not provide an independent voice for the employees and became an obstacle to changes management wanted to make. Examples from four other companies and commentary by consultant Carl Harshman round out this 35-minute video's coverage of troubled partnerships.

Twisted

At age 17, filmmaker Laurel Chiten was in a terrible car accident. Months later, her neck began jerking out of control. Doctors finally figured out that Chiten had dystonia – a neurological disorder that forces your muscles to twist into abnormal, often painful, movements or postures. When you have dystonia, you tell your body to do one thing, but your brain tells it to do something else, as if your brain has a mind of its own.

#407: Twisted Love: Dating Violence Exposed

When loves turns ugly, you have to learn to walk away. Neve Campbell joins In the Mix reporters for a powerful and emotional look at something that more and more teens are facing: dating violence. We meet young women who have been emotionally and physically abused by the guys they loved -- and survived to get out of the relationship. We also talk to young men who have been abusers, and visit with teens teaching other teens about sexual stereotypes. Next, we visit a program in New York where teens attack the issue of dating violence with a unique weapon: theatre. The District Attorney of Westchester County tells teens about their legal rights, and we learn about the signs of abuse and where you can go for help. Appropriate for a classroom, youth group, or peer counseling programs, teens will gain an understanding of the issue and be better equipped to deal with it effectively.-Video Librarian Used in an educational session, your video was well received and the group benefited from it immensely. --Rebecca Zwart, domestic violence advocate *DVDs are also available on over 50 other topics of critical interest to teens. Two Dollars and A Dream

Two Dollars and a Dream is a biography of Madame C.J. Walker, the child of slaves freed by the Civil War, who became America's first self-made woman millionaire of any race. By tying together social, economic and political history, the film also offers a view of black America from 1867 to the 1930's. Mrs. Walker's fortune was built on skin and hair care products. She parlayed a homemade beauty formula into a prosperous business, marketing her products from coast to coast. Her daughter, A'Leilia Walker, was an important patron of the Harlem Renaissance. The two women lived in royal style, complete with a mansion and chauffeured limousines. This little known story is both entertaining and informative. It combines interviews, historical stills and unique film footage including scenes from Harlem's famous Cotton Club. The film is punctuated with the music of Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway and other masters of that era.
